Beaches

  • First stop is 'Moonstone Beach'. This is one of the easiest to access, mostly flat, and convenient parking adjacent to the beach. You'll pass Moonstone Grill on your drive down the hill, which also has a great view of the beach.
  • After Moonstone, do NOT get back on the highway. Take 'Scenic Drive' all the way to the town of Trinidad. This whole road has lots of little stop off points with gorgeous beaches and views. If you’re not sure how to find this, after 'Moonstone Beach' type ‘Luffenholtz Beach’ in your map app.
  • From here, we recommend you navigate to 'Trinidad State Beach'. If you followed Scenic Drive, you'll come to the small town of Trinidad. You'll know you've made it when you see the gas station. Turn into the town, and drive past some local eateries and the lighthouse down to the beach. There is plenty of parking and a restroom here.
  • If you're up for a small hike (short but a steady incline), we recommend hiking the 'Trinidad Head' (that big hill facing you when you pulled into to the parking lot).
  • After Trinidad town center, scenic drive becomes Patrick’s Point Drive. Get off on Anderson Lane and go to ‘College Cove Trail / Beach’. This is one of Christine's favorite beach areas. You can walk around the trail loop, which is a flat walk through the woods with some great beach views. Or, near the start of the trail on the left side you’ll pass stairs that go down to the beach. There are a lot of stairs, and it can get steep, but this is a beautiful beach that's normally shielded from the wind and tends to feel a bit warmer.
  • Continue following Patrick’s Point Drive to 'Sue Meg Park'. Within Sue Meg, you'll find Agate Beach (find some pretty pebbles / sea glass) and Wedding Rock (where Jason and Christine did some of their engagement photos).

Parks & Trails

Humboldt County is a special place, situated within the Redwood Forest and rugged California coastline. There are endless trails and parks to explore in the area, but we've listed below a few we feel are worth checking out.

Each location includes a link to a website which will give you more information
*This will take you off our site*

Fern Canyon (via Gold Bluffs Beach)
Orick

Walk through a magical canyon covered in ferns. This is an easy 1 mile loop, but make sure to wear water proof shoes, because you will be walking through some wet areas (ferns thrive in water). If there is a large puddle before the park entrance, do NOT drive through and get stuck.

Lady Bird Johnson Grove Trail
Orick
An easy 1 mile loop through redwood and douglas fir forest. If you'd like a bit more of a challenge, look into the Berry Glen Trail, which is 3 miles and has more of an incline, but you will see more old growth trees, and it ultimately connects to Lady Bird Grove.
Redwood Sky Walk
Eureka
Located within the Sequoia Park Zoo, get a new perspective and stroll through the redwood canopy across a series of bridges.

Newton B. Drury Scenic Drive
Orick

Drive to Elk Prairie Campground then follow Newton B Drury Scenic Drive until it connects back to the 101. The drive itself is stunning, but there are also many trails right off this road with old growth redwoods to explore (J & C's forest engagement photos were taken here).
wedding-rock.jpg
Sue Meg (Patrick's Point) State Park
Trinidad
Also listed in the beach section, as there's hiking trails and coastal access. There are many points of interest here, including Wedding Rock where Jason and Christine's costal engagement photos were taken.

Trillium Falls Trail
Orick
Technica
lly part of Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. A three mile loop with a moderate incline, which takes you past a small but enchanting little waterfall through the forest, with some redwoods scattered throughout.
IMG_5242.jpg
Arcata Community Forest
Arcata
Located on the backside of Cal Poly Humboldt. While the redwoods here are not as large as some of the locations listed above, and the forest is a bit more manicured, this park is still beautiful, and easy to access with its' proximity to town.
Trails_1Soaring.jpg
Trees of Mystery
Klamath
A bit further of a drive, but this location includes a path through the redwoods, a canopy trail (similar to the sky walk), and a gondola ride through the tree tops.
